Well, other than the huge bugs that come out in tropical areas due to the moisture, the wet right now sounds fabulous! (of course, this enthusiasm is heavily influenced by my living in the middle of the desert in a drought where every drop of water from the sky is an occasion for an impromptu ceremonial rain dance).

After reading this article, I'm stepping up our timeline for visiting El Valle. We moved to Boquete in February of this year from Southern California and, while we love Boquete, we are not averse to moving to another place that is ready to explode. Great ideas for businesses, by the way.

And thank you for posting the link to my web site under "Adventures of an ex-pat wife in Boquete."
Regards,
Robyn

Great article, Marta. I'm interested in why the literary rate was a top priority? (Not questioning the validity, just curious as to why you feel that's a good indicator of quality of life.)

This is a really great idea for a blog, Marta! I've heard from several people over the years who were considering Panama and would love having a central resource like this one -- very cool idea that I will pass along.

Wow, this is really surprising to hear! It definitely counters the negative stereotype of doctors and medical care in tropical places being subpar. I always love it when stereotypes get broken down!

Glad you liked el valle. I and my family have called it home for 6 years now. It seems to fit everything we wanted, the cooler temps. close to the city but not that close, 45 mins and your sitting on the beach is always nice. I wanted to touch on the subject of bars on the windows. It's not that crime here is bad, because it all the time we have been here, no one has ever been shot, or stabbed or raped or robbed at gun or knife point.. The reason for the bars on the windows is the simple fact that very rich Panamanian's do have a 2nd home here and would leave it and not return for months on end. So they wanted to make their empty home harder to get into. Once this started everyone now puts bars on the windows, just because everyone else does.

You only have to take a look at the roofs on these homes to see if someone wanted in your home, it would be very easy to come through the roof.. I even tried that out to test that thought, all thou at the time I really wasn't planning on doing it, fixing a leak on mine and one wrong step I found myself in the living room in under two seconds.

I saw where you had posted asking about what type of business el valle needs. First off I wish I knew that myself. You have to understand your customers and their needs. There is by last count around 8k people who live here and in these mountains, many of those are poor living and taking care of a family on 300.00 or less per month. Work here is very limited for them, a maid, or yard person or a job at a company here. Many take the bus out each day around 4am to get to the city to work. Then you have the very rich who only come here once a month, they seem to enjoy their homes while their kids ride four wheelers and golf carts around town. They have a cook that prepares their meals so mainly they stay at home, they buy very little here because they can get a better price on things they need in the city and bring it up with them.

also note that ALL new business must be in the zoned areas for that, which is main street. Laws apply to all in panama but you will run into the fact that many times they will turn a blind eye for a fellow country men while coming down on you to comply fully with those laws.

I read your blog where you thought about insurance, that is going to be a tough one because most of that is already in place and they just aren't going to stand by and allow you to come in and cut yourself a piece of that pie. also keep in mind that on a retirement visa your not allowed to work, you can own the place but you can't work it.

hope some of this helps....

El Valle, according to the website Antonvalley.com has 36 restaurants. We have been in El Valle for three months and have eaten at eight of them. Several are favorites and we eat at them regularly.

There are, I understand, a couple of apartments here but why would you want an apartment when you can get a gardner for a very reasonable cost.

Expats do a number of things in the community from recycling to spay and neuter clinics. There is an expat group that meets somewhat irregularly.

As to meeting people, we walk everywhere and have met some lovely people in restaurants, in the market and other places we frequent.

My Spanish is poco but I keep working on it and the people seem to appreciate that. There are many here who speak English.

We decided that Panama is where we wanted to live so here we are.

Hope you find it an interesting and happy place too.
